Written by Trevor Montgomery
SOUTH DAYTONA, FL., A photo posted to Facebook by a Florida area woman showing a dog with its muzzle duct-taped shut has gained worldwide attention and created a social media frenzy, prompting police in Florida to open an animal cruelty investigation.
Katie Brown, of South Daytona, posted the disturbing image on Friday morning, with the caption, “This is what happens when you dont shut up!!!”
As of Saturday afternoon, just 24 hours after the initial post, the posting had been shared more than 320,000 times. Police officials in South Daytona, where Brown resides, say they have been completely overwhelmed with calls about the post, and had received more than 30,000 calls by Saturday morning.
According to the city of South Daytona, by Saturday morning, so many people had been flooding the South Daytona Police Department with concerned calls, e-mails and messages, the city was forced to put out a press release on Facebook assuring citizens the case was already being investigated and to stop calling to report the incident and image because the volume of calls were overwhelming the department’s communications center.
Despite being inundated with thousands of angry messages and threats, Brown has remained defiant and has refused to remove the image. Brown has since posted a follow-up message on Facebook, saying, “Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasnt barked since… POINT MADE!!!”
According to NBC News, South Daytona police confirmed they now have an open and active animal cruelty investigation against Brown.
Law enforcement officials from South Daytona said Saturday morning they had confirmed the dog was safe and not in immediate danger and thanked the public for their outpouring of concern.
About the animal cruelty case, officials have stated, “Rest assured that a full investigation will be done and appropriate action will be taken.”
